Swina is a guitarist and a vocalist who performs original music in SL, created solely by him in his RL home studio. He loves playing blues, jazz, funky and fusion and counts BB King, Eric Clapton, Robben Ford and Santana among his favorite musicians.



Who is the man behind the avatar?



Swina is an IT manager whose life has always gone with the music.
When he was 14 he bought his first Eko guitar and he started playing and writing his own music. He loves also playing keyboard and piano:he has an awesome 1920 's Hofman-Khune piano on whose ivory keyboard he took his first jazz piano lessons...but the guitar was always on his way.When electronic music was accessible to his pocket he bought his first Roland hardware sequencer and a Roland synth and arranger. Soon after he got a Yamaha like strato electric guitar with a 100 W Montarbo valve ampli. What a deal !



Four years ago he discovered the virtual stages in Second Life, packing all the inworld venues where he performs. His love for the jazz/blues genre comes through in his melodic verses and smooth rhytms.
He only performs original tunes but sometimes he sings in his own way some great songs:Springsteen's "Devils and Dust" and Sergio Endrigo's "Io che ho amo solo te" among his favourites.


Most of the original songs are licensed under Creative Commons License and are free to download (some right reserved).



Swina also believes that music contamination is the most interesting thing for a musician: a way to meet musicians all over the world, to develop a new sound and to feel new emotions.
He is also used to play guitar in jamming sessions with SL artists like UKD Project (live), Ezcape Hax (using ninjam), Ridha Cooljoke (live). He has also recorded guitar and piano tracks for Jax Streeter, Ezcape Hax and UKD Project songs.




Once I asked him how did he discover Second Life.


"Just an accident that occurred to me -he says- I had some health problem and I had to stay at home for one month month so I discovered SL reading and surfing on the web"



  Swina would not have any problem using his real name, but basically his artistic life is strictly tied up to his avie's name that he liked so much too!



 I'm always very curious about what artists like to do inworld, so I asked him about his experience in SL and what does he  like to do when he's not playing." What I basically do in SL is playing all the time...but I also like to go listen some good musicians, most of them are my close friends.I don't like joking nor stupid people or stupid situations.
Definitely I'm always looking for something interesting in SL. "

 As many musicians  I met inworld also Swina definitely thinks that Second life can  be a valid showcase his RL works: for him this virtual world is actually an unique place where to present his music, where a musician can have listeners from all over the world, sharing with them feelings and thoughts,


He recently release his brand new CD “Not Me”: "Despite of the title,he says,it's all  about me and my music.Definitely it's a sort of  escape:I put inside of it many of the things that happened  both in my real and my second life (by the way I don't think that they are so apart). Some of the songs have been in my head  for many months, but I was not able to finish them.In the last month I've been able to finally go through it: during last 4 weeks I recorded all the songs that were ideas."



I asked Swina to describe the  sound of this new CD :"I was looking for an essential sound. Most of the songs are based on blues (with some little funny funky riff ) and I tried to arrange the CD with the typical blues band instruments: drums, bass, keyboad (mostly organ or electric piano) and guitar.I think also that this solution gives more room to the voice, to the lyrics that are simple as always.

“Not Me” is a song about people who are no more able to really communicate each other.“Wanna think that’s true” (a slow blues) is about the illusions that every impossible love brings with it.  
“Shine Babe Shine” is a typical soul blues.Every song has a story to tell, not necessary about Swina, but also about his friends and the people he met in his real or second life.



In this CD Swina also included 2 instrumental songs :"I love the sound of my new guitar, and I didn’t want to take off music with my voice.By the way in this CD I didn’t use any synth, brass or strings as I used in the past, and also the effects are very basic. I just wanted to have a simple sound in order to give more emphasys on lead guitar solo and on lyrics ".




Thsi CD is definitely it's all about music."Maybe you can find passion, emotions or nothing.-he says- It is just the music that I want to play now and in the near future (I think). Maybe next week I will start to play some jazzy sound or something else. I don’t know. I’m not involved about music style. I like to play over what I feel."



I found that all the lyrics are  very essential and I asked Swina the reason why."It’s simple to answer to this question. Well, basically is that since english is not my language, sometimes is difficult to write down good lyrics. I’m used to start from a sentence that I like, or that I think is good for the song. I don’t spend so many time writing lyrics. Most of them was written in 1 hour or less, and I didn’t change later except some typical errors".

Cosa puo spingere un musicista a debuttare su SL?

Sicuramente deve credere nella sua musica e deve essere convinto della possibilità di condividerla con un pubblico eterogeneo ed internazionale.

Ecco la storia di Swina Allen uno dei musicisti più amati in questo mondo virtuale.

Swina, appena entrato in SL ha aperto un club l'ItalianMood con l'idea di ospitare alcune performances dei migliori artisti di SL cosÏ come dei talenti emergenti.Grazie alle sue conoscenze tecniche ha anche aiutato molti musicisti a trasmettere inworld la loro musica.

Ad un certo punto ha però deciso di mettesi in gioco in prima persona iniziando a fare concerti inworld.

Le  radici della musica di Swina sono il blues che, nella sua semplicità armonica, è la vera base della musica moderna; senza dubbio sono riconoscibili anche influenze rock (Carlos Santana e Weather Report) e jazz nella chiave moderna ed innovativa di Waine Shorter e Jaco Pastorius.

Da queste influenze è nato un sound originale e non riconducibile a uno stile in particolare,fra lo smooth jazz e il chillout, che non trascura la sperimentazione
.

Durante la sue performances il pubblico inworld ha mostrato di apprezzare questo eclettico chitarrista che utilizza la tecnologia come supporto della sua creatività e ama utilizzare suoni e voci campionate.

Swina ha acccettato di rispondere ad alcune domande riguardo la sua avventura musicale in Second Life: eccovene il resoconto.

"Swina raccontaci cosa si prova ad esibirsi in Second Life..."

"Un'emozione fortissima...Dipende da come la vivi. Io penso sempre che la cosa più importante alla fine non sia la propria musica in se stessa, o la sua corretta esecuzione (fossero anche cover), ma soprattutto quello che lasci a chi ti ascolta. Non è necessario essere musicisti dotati di una tecnica sbalorditiva, secondo me se un musicista non riesce a comunicare con la sua musica ... è un interprete, un esecutore che pur bravo resta esecutore".

Una delle caratteristiche piu significative delle live performances in SL è il feedback immediato che si ricava dagli spettatori presenti che comunicano le proprie emozioni in tempo reale.

 Ho poi  chiesto a Swina cosa ne pensa dei  fans  e in generale del suo pubblico inworld.

"La magia dei palchi virtuali di Second Life consiste nel permetterti di

raggiungere un pubblico eterogeneo e cosmopolita, spesso esigente e competente: la sensazione che si ricava dal loro consenso espresso in termini sia di entusiastici commenti scritti nella chat pubblica sia in termini di graditissime "tips" (letteralmente mance) è davvero grandiosa. E se si pensa che tutto questo avviene mentre sei comodomente seduto nel tuo studio... beh direi che è davvero impagabile!"

Ho chiesto poi a Swina cosa si aspetta dal futuro.

" SL ha un grande vantaggio, la possibilità di metterti in contatto immediato con altri musicisti, di ascoltare la loro musica e perché no, di collaborare con alcuni di loro, di attivare uno scambio di esperienze. In questo senso la tecnologia può essere di enorme aiuto (inteso come strumento che facilita la condivisione delle idee) e sicuramente mi da la possibilità di sperimentare, di provare contaminazioni, ma

soprattutto di comunicare in modo diretto con altri musicisti. Inoltre c'è la reale possibilità di "incontrare" in modo altrettanto diretto chi segue la tua musica, chi la ascolta, chi viene ai tuoi concerti. Penso che questo nonostante i pixels che ci separano resta una dimensione comunque molto stimolante ed interessante".

"Con quali artisti inworld hai collaborato?"

"Con Ezcape Hax ho scritto una canzone "I will try", con il gruppo UKD Project ho suonato insieme, così come con Ridha Cooljoke e Jax Streeter.

Ho chiesto poi a Swina il suo rapporto con la tecnologia, in riferimento alla produzione musicale.

"Io utilizzo molto la tecnologia nella mia musica cercando di sfruttarne la facilità con la quale è possibile mettere in pratica le idee. Quindi un utilizzo come supporto, come strumento a supporto della creatività.

Oggi realizzare un proprio studio non richiede investimenti che erano improponibili fino a qualche anno fa. La musica digitale ha sconvolto questo panorama facilitando enormemente il processo di avvicinamento alla musica e soprattutto alla possibilità di "creare" e "produrre" la propria musica in completa autonomia. Poi certo c'è il problema della distribuzione e di come farla conoscere ed anche qui le tecnologie possono comunque aiutare (pensiamo al web 2.0, ai social network, alle web radio, Second Life stessa, ecc.). Quindi assolutamente non demonizzo la tecnologia se essa viene usata per dare la possibilità di diffondere musica, soprattutto quella indipendente."

A questo punto mi viene spontaneo chiedere a Swina come nascono le sue canzoni.

"Non esiste una regola fissa.Personalmente io non riesco a creare canzoni a tavolino. Forse per questo quando risento le mie canzoni mi accorgo delle tante imperfezioni, degli errori che esse contengono dal punto di vista strettamente tecnico. Se le perfezionassi con un lavoro in studio accurato otterrei un risultato tecnicamente migliore, ma toglierei loro immediatezza e freschezza. In altre parole...non mi viene facile ritoccare i miei pezzi!

Le mie ultime canzoni (si possono scaricare gratis dal suo sito) sono "canzoni di un giorno". Ognuna di esse è nata in un giorno. Creata, suonata, registrata e pubblicata in un solo giorno. Non amo lavorare molto su ogni singolo pezzo. La tentazione di arricchire, di integrare suoni, di "perfezionare" c'è, ma alla fine desisto perché non mi soddisfa. Preferisco magari un assolo con qualche imperfezione se mi emoziona più di un assolo perfetto ma magari un po' freddino.

Faccio infine a Swina un'ultima domanda: "Qual è il rapporto fra la tua musica e Second Life?"

"Second Life è stata una fonte continua di ispirazione, con tutto ciò che questo comporta nel bene e nel male: in SL si prova ogni genere di emozione, gioia, tristezza, soddisfazione, amicizia ed è innegabile che la mia l'ispirazione nasca da quel genere di emozioni...

Suonare in SL è comunque un'emozione. Dipende da come la vivi. Io penso sempre che la cosa più importante alla fine non sia la propria musica in se stessa, o la sua corretta esecuzione (fossero anche cover), ma soprattutto quello che lasci a chi ti ascolta. Questo è l'emozione più forte. Sapere di riuscire a fare questo. E non c'è bisogno di essere musicisti con una tecnica sbalorditiva, secondo me se un musicista non riesce a comunicare con la sua musica ... è un interprete, un esecutore che pur bravo resta esecutore."

Nei versi delle sue canzoni si può ritrovare originalità, intensità, venerazione ed eresia : solo di tanto in tanto esse permettono all'ascoltatore di prendere fiato e di stemperare la tensione, così simili come sono ad oggetti preziosi in cui l'acciao argentato  si intreccia a legno ed osso :sono parole suggestive e che fanno pensare .
Ecco chi è  Zorch Boomhauer.
La sua musica ha una qualche dolorosa   franchezza ed onestà che raramente si ritrova perfino  nel folk più semplice e crudo, ed i suoi racconti si snodano in una melodia elegante e nelle sue parole a volte brutali .

 Lazy Mistwood (aka LazynOva) è una cantautrice francese che da poco si esibisce sui palchi virtuali di SecondLife:è una ragazza dolce e sensibile ,ama la musica da quando era solo una bambina e non ha mai smesso di comporre canzoni.
 In Second life non usa mai back tracks!  .
Anche se ha appena 25 anni Lazy  ha già scritto diversi brani originali:fra i musicisti che l'hanno maggiormente influenzata vanno annoverati  Janis Joplin, Feist e Portishead.
Con la sua dolce voce calda e sensuale canta i suoi pezzi accompagnata dalla sua amica chitarrista FoxyLady :insieme formano un duo davvero strepitoso!


Lazy Mistwood ( aka LazynOva ) is a french songwriter new in SecondLife Music World . Only 25 years old and she already has several originals songs influenced by Janis Joplin , Feist or Portishead . Playing the guitar for about 17 years now.
In RL he plays in a Band called Jazzmanix.... they  play very different things from Swing, Funk, Blues to "Rock".

With over 20 years as a professional gigging musician and recording artist based in Los Angeles, Zak Claxton is an entertaining and exciting singer/songwriter performing in Second Life. Using his acoustic guitar, voice, and the occasional harmonica, Zak brings high energy to his original music, as well as occasional covers by artists ranging from the '60s to the '00s. His influences include Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Who, the Beatles, and many more.

JaNa KYoMooN è una musicista di Second Life  che di tanto in tanto si esibisce in RL come Jan Pulsford.


JaNa KYoMooN suona come solista con una serie di improvvisazioni basate su un mix di elettronica ed   with ambient  con riflessi ritmici che sono stati descritti come   "una galleria di paesaggi e dipinti sonori  ."
